REEL CARE - PDP 12, 25 and 40 REELS

MOST PLASTICS FADE IF LEFT IN THE SUN

PDP12, 25 and 40 reels wont melt in the sun, but treat your reel with respect and don’t be surprised if the colour fades if exposed to long term sun or UV light. Keeping the reel out of prolonged direct sunlight will extend its service life considerably.

FREE-PLAY ADJUSTMENT

Note: thread-locking solution (such as Loctiteä 243) is required for this operation. Don’t be tempted to disassemble the reel unless you have the means to re-secure the dome nut with an appropriate thread-locking solution.

Each PDP12, 25 and 40 reel is carefully adjusted to ensure minimum free-play, but without causing binding or tight winding.   If the reel spool is binding, the reel can be adjusted to increase the headspace under the head of the main bolt.  A nylon washer is used inside the reel casing to ensure smooth winding.  However, nylon typically absorbs water and swells slightly, potentially causing the reel to bind if there isn't enough headspace left under the bolt (0.5 – 1.0mm is good). To re-assemble the reel, apply new thread locking solution inside the dome nut, hold the spool properly centered in the casing and use a spanner on the head of the bolt (ensuring sufficient headspace) before replacing and tightening the dome nut at the back.

PDP12, 25 and 40 LINE REPLACEMENT

The line on each reel is passed through the spindle and secured to the main bolt to allow for even laying of the line when retrieving. Should the line require replacement, disassembly of the reel will be necessary and line replacement performed as follows:

Disassembly.

First remove the dome nut and washer. Then unscrew the main bolt from the outer housing being careful not to lose the nylon washer between the spool and the housing or to dislodge the stainless steel bushing. Remove the main bolt from the spool and cut the line off just above where it enters the spindle. Push the off-cut and knot out through a hole at the end of the spool with a narrow screwdriver or similar instrument.

Reassembly.

The new line should first be passed through the outer housing from outside to inside leaving enough length to manipulate. Feed the end of the line through the small hole in the spindle and push it out through the near bolt-hole with a screwdriver. Then tie a figure of eight slip knot in the line. Feed the knot back into the spindle (taking care not to pull the slip knot tight as you do this). Push the main bolt back through the spool (and through the slip knot as you go). Replace the nylon washer and simply reassemble the reel in the reverse order of its disassembly.
